Multi-Spindle Screw Machine Set-up Technician

SUMMARY

Sets up and operate multiple spindle Automatic Screw Machines equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms to machine metal bar stock by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reads blueprint or job order for product specifications such as dimensions, tolerances, number of parts to be machined, and tooling instructions such as cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cuts, and cutting tools to be used.
  • Positions and secures specified collets, bushings, and stock pushers onto stock feeding mechanism and loads bar stock into feeding mechanism, installs and adjusts specified cams, gears, and stops to control stock and tool movements at each station. 
  • Positions and secures tools in toolholders.   
  • Sets cutting speeds and feed rates.   
  • Moves controls to cycle machine through settings, stopping machine and adjusting tool positions and machine controls to allow for operating factors such as timing, clearance between moving parts, and chip removal. 
  • Loads 12-foot pieces of bar stock into spindles. 
  • Starts machine, observes operation, and inspects first run and sample workpiece to ensure machining conforms to specifications.
  • Replaces worn tools and operates bench grinder to sharpen tools.   
  • Machines metal materials.     
  • Operates machine to produce quality parts according to print specifications.   
  • Troubleshoots machine problems, and conducts preventative maintenance on machines. 
  • Load baskets of metal parts onto skids.
  • Pushes chip carts for unloading into chip hopper.
  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of work area.
  • Carries out work procedures according to established safety and ISO guidelines.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent. Experience operating screw machines for the knowledge and understanding of how they work. Ability to read and use micrometers, calipers, height stands, and comparator is required.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and write general work instructions. Must have the ability to communicate with other personnel throughout the shop.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

 

REASONABLE ABILITY

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or by blueprint specifications. Ability to troubleshoot programming, tooling, and material problems.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to work on all areas of the machine in order to make adjustments and to change tooling. This may require the individual to stand, stoop, bend, and kneel for long periods of time. Position requires the ability to see small pieces and to manipulate them with their hands. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Position works out on the plant floor and will experience the varying temperatures and noise levels of the plant. This person will work near moving mechanical parts and will contact various oils and solvents associated with the machining process.   

 Employees in this position will be required to own or purchase the necessary tools to perform this job.
